Abstract
The article considers one of the pressing issues of our time - the process of ethnic self-determination. A large number of conflicts precipitated the disintegration of the USSR. Some of these evolved into armed confrontations, others into limited armed conflicts or tensions. Clearly it can be said that the most violent conflicts of the late XX - early XXI centuries in Europe occurred in the Balkans and the post-Soviet environs. The author analyzes the conflicts in the South Caucasus and Central Asia, the Moldovan - Transnistrian conflict, as well as the current developing conflict in Ukraine. It considers the evolution of the approaches by Russia towards the settlement of these conflicts as well as its involvement.
