Barriers arising during academic supervision of degree candidates

Abstract

In the face of today’s challenges and shifts in the global situation, with limited time and resources, it is vital to establish technological leadership and advance scientific and technological competencies. One cannot achieve technological sovereignty and economic security without scientific and technological discoveries, new industries, and the advancement of science. For knowledge-intensive and high-tech industries, it is crucial to train highly qualified personnel and improve the quality and quantity of dissertation defenses. In this regard, the role of the research supervisor is becoming increasingly significant to a certain extent. When studying issues related to dissertation defense, we should consider not only motivational factors, but also barriers to academic supervision. The article examines the findings from ten in-depth interviews conducted with academic supervisors in the nuclear energy sector. These supervisors oversee a total of 24 dissertation studies. The author also conducted an online survey to gather opinions on the priorities, objectives, plans, and expectations of scientific activity, as well as the difficulties encountered when defending dissertations. The results of the study show that in order to develop segments of the knowledge economy, it is necessary to improve efforts by transforming approaches to creating favorable conditions for scientific leadership.
