The article looks at the 'spherical', politological, philosophic, historical approaches to studying the nature of civil society, investigating its current condition in Russia and abroad. The author describes dangerous contemporary trends (reduction of the middle class, development of authoritarian movements etc.) and counterbalancing processes of cooperation between public power and society and delegation of authority to local government and civil society organizations.
