The paper analyzes the value features that determine the choice of a military profession. The purpose of this research work was to disclose the features of professional choice of cadets in the context of the problems of socio-economic and socio-cultural transformation of modern Russian society. The method of the study was based on a questionnaire survey of cadets of the 1st and 5th year students of the Saratov St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk Interior Military Troop Institutes conducted by the author in 2013. The basis of the survey is on the idea of choice of a profession as a “spatial orientation” of the individual in existing social and professional values. Space represented by the poles of selection “society - the community” and “professional in individualism - collectivism.” The sampling was continuous and totaled 593 people. According to the survey, conclusions were drawn about the transformation of young people of traditional ideas values and characteristic of the military profession and the nomination of the priority of values such as career development, material support, the ability to manage the quality of professional work. The outcome of the results of the study can be used to organize activities of military-patriotic education of modern youth at the level of general secondary education and higher military school.
