Utopia and international relations in the space of fictional worlds

Received: 15.07.2016 Published: 15.07.2016

Abstract

The article dwells upon the eternal aspiration of mankind to design imaginary worlds. Pictures of fictional worlds were already known in ancient times, and five hundred years ago with the advent Thomas More's "Utopia” has become synonymous with this concept. The article analyses the reasons of creation of non-existing spaces that can be hardly defined as objects of geopolitical interests and gains, but which, nevertheless, continue to attract peoples' attention and are stored in the forms of stories, tales, and legends. Today they actively come in domestic and foreign political projects, and the author cites historical examples of attempts to realise the ideas of fictional worlds. These models can be constructive to unite the society, but they may also reflect expansionist goals. Therefore, their early detection and argumentative critique should bring along realistic policy and protection of public mind from hazardous geopolitical illusions.
