Abstract
The article focuses on a thorough examination of the epistemological potential of an interdisciplinary approach in social and humanities research, taking into account the transformation of modern society and scientific knowledge. The study investigates the evolution of interdisciplinarity, from the first integrative attempts in classical sociologists’ works to contemporary research strategies in the context of a complex, nonlinear, and highly differentiated social reality. The authors provide a detailed analysis of the four fundamental conceptual «turns» in science that served as the foundation for interdisciplinary research methodology. The paper identifies key methodological innovations for each scientific «turn». The study organizes the epistemological benefits of interdisciplinarity as well as its drawbacks. The author categorizes interdisciplinary approaches into two groups: subjectively oriented and objectively oriented. The article focuses especially on the unique features of modern social processes that call for the use of interdisciplinary approaches. As a unique research object, the author believes that the Internet is a perfect place to test interdisciplinary approaches.
