Abstract

The article discusses the potential introduction of intelligent electricity metering systems (IEMS) as an essential component of modern energy infrastructure. The primary objective is to assess the efficiency of IEMS implementation in the context of cultivating the «smart city» concept and the digital transformation of the energy sector. The authors examine the financial advantages of putting IEMS into practice, such as lower electricity losses, cost optimization, and higher-quality customer service. The social effects of putting these systems into practice are given particular attention. These benefits include making it easier to communicate with energy firms, facilitating cost control, and enhancing the environment. At the same time, it should be noted that the actual implementation of IEMS is limited in scope, utilizing only some of its functions. The authors propose initiating the development of administrative measures that will allow the full potential of IEMS to be realized. The paper examines the impact of IEMS on economic energy efficiency growth, the support of innovative technologies, and job creation. The authors also consider the possibility of combining machine learning technologies with IEMS. The introduction of new technologies will facilitate the development of a unified digital ecosystem for energy consumption. The study’s practical value is supported by an examination of a real-life project to deploy an IEMS in the Rostov region, which shows a considerable reduction in electricity losses and an increase in energy consumption efficiency. The study’s conclusions can be applied to planning the energy infrastructure modernization in other regions.
